The jacket is made from American NYCO ripstop fabric, a 50/50 cotton-nylon blend, in the original Crye Precision MultiCam color scheme, with NIR treatment that reduces the fabric’s visibility in the IR spectrum. The fabric also features a Teflon coating that protects it from dirt and water. Fabric with these exact specifications is used to make uniforms for U.S. Army soldiers. The jacket has a stand-up collar, closes with Velcro, and features a central fastener in the form of a split “tractor-style” plastic zipper covered by Velcro flaps. On the chest, there are two hidden Velcro pockets with vertical openings for easy access to the contents, as well as horizontal Velcro panels for attaching name tags and medical information patches. The underarms feature embroidered grommets to improve ventilation. On the sleeves: one patch pocket each with a vertical zippered opening and a Multicam-colored Velcro panel, with utility compartments for attaching pens or similarly sized gear. On the back: a reinforced yoke at the upper back, with a Velcro panel for an IR marker under the collar, and expansion pleats along the armhole contour that help maintain freedom of arm movement, even when a body armor vest or load-bearing harness is worn over the jacket. The sleeves are equipped with a patch pocket with a Velcro fastener for attaching soft protective gear. The cuffs are adjustable with a Velcro flap. This pattern was created as a single, universal camouflage for the U.S. Army. The need for it became apparent following Operation Desert Storm in Iraq. The camouflage patterns in use at the time—both the Woodland pattern for forested terrain and the Tri-Color Desert pattern specifically designed for desert operations—did not provide the necessary concealment for soldiers. Each operation, as before, required specialized camouflage. This significantly complicated the work of supply services and reduced the soldiers’ protection. Even with the start of operations in Afghanistan and the new campaign in Iraq, following the introduction of the new universal digital camouflage (Digital), the situation did not change fundamentally. It became clear that a new, unified, universal pattern was needed—one that would conceal a soldier in any terrain and at any distance from an observer. It must provide equally effective camouflage against the backdrop of vegetation as well as against desert or rocky terrain.
